I saw Hsiao Hsien today and gave her the silver bracelet that i made her. she acted surprised, i didnt think she would. i thought she was expecting it but i realize that she is genuinely pleased. The needling was very light today arms legs and one in the center of the forehead. I couldnt feel the one in my head and had to keep wiggling my eyebrows to make sure it was really there. We talked about taking dance classes in our youth. Her funny story was about taking improv and having to do a written paper descibing a class. After grading, the paper was mailed to her house and unfortunately her parents were still snooping in her mail, so when she came home her father confronted her with a grave expression, "have you been participatingin Orgies?"
Having taken improv back in the eighties i remember it got pretty touchy-feely so in her day late seventies... well I can imagine her dad's reaction to the paper; he is very traditional Chinese.

This is from an article about mind control/brainwashing techniques.

Father, Son and CIA
"Isolation: According to Biderman, the POW was removed from his group and kept by himself. My father was placed in a darkened and quiet room by himself in a special part of the hospital.

Monopolization of perception: Biderman was here making reference to a process of cutting off stimulation from the environment. POWs were kept in physical isolation with restricted movement, monotonous food and darkness. My father was placed in a condition of partial sensory deprivation which also results in markedly reduced perception of surroundings and a focusing of attention upon the internal processes of thinking and body sensations.

Induced debilitation or exhaustion: Illness was induced in the POW by procedures designed to produce exhaustion, such as prolonged interrogation or forcing him to write down all his thoughts. My father was made ill with shock treatments, drugs and sleep. In addition, my father and other Cameron patients were told to fill notebooks with their thoughts as they listened to voices. The patients were forced to listen to the recorded messages sixteen hours a day — loud voices, soft, male, female, multiples of voices pressuring patients who had been rendered confused and defenceless.

Threats were another element of the brainwashing process. POWs were exposed to all kinds of threats to themselves or their families. My father faced the threat of endless isolation with the possibility of being cut off from his family forever.

Occasional indulgences or favours were offered to soften up the POWs. These might include special foods or exercise. My father was permitted rare telephone calls to our family or an occasional bath.

Demonstrating "omnipotence" and "omniscience": the captors had complete control over the fate of the POWs; they had complete knowledge of their activities. My father waited anxiously for Cameron, since he had rendered the patients so totally dependent upon him. Cameron and his associates also demonstrated their complete control by having nurses question patients every two hours about what they were hearing on the psychic driving tapes.

Degradation reinforced the helplessness of the POWs: they were not permitted to attend to personal hygiene, they were not allowed privacy, and they were subjected to insults and taunts. My father, like other Cameron patients, was made incontinent in bladder and bowel. At times he was fed through a tube. The patients endured insults through the psychic driving messages ("You're a bad mother"). Doctors and nurses entered their rooms at will; and my father's questions of them were ignored: "What do you want?" he would ask in vain. Powerlessness was magnified by this complete disregard for human dignity.

Enforcing trivial demands: POWs were forced to obey detailed rules that governed even the simplest part of their days. My father and the other patients were forced to remain in their cubicles, go to the toilet on demand, eat when told to, and obey Cameron's instructions without question.

Memories
Ouspensky suggested that we are all asleep, or unconscious of ourselves, then he met Gurdjieff whom he thought had the answer to awaken people . They set up some training centers to train people around the world and then G. told O. that he made the whole thing up out of folk lore and bullshit just to bilk rich people out of money. O. didnt take it very well ,but alot of followers had made enough progress in the study of consciousness that they didn't abandon ship right away. Any way a lot of books ended up being published about the material and it reveals the minds of people a century ago. The rich intellectuals were all to willing to give up huge amounts of cash to develop themselves into better people and make the world a better place. These guys also went through the Russian revolution. all Gurdjieff really told them was "eat the right food, be good to your parents and children, don't think bad thoughts, be kind, don't take anything personally and do what you can to escape the obvious monster.
On the other hand most of what he says makes sense. The patterns of resonance that we call music are more than just entertainment. Everything has this resonant characteristic and the different 'contexts' that 'information' gets organied into are represented in a very concrete way by music. Indian and Islamic music have an important part in spiritual practice of those religions, the performance of Indian Classical Music is always a religious experience. It is also a history lesson about a point in time when The Mogul Empire ruled over northern India. the ruling class encouraged the development of their 'host' culture to the degree that it benefited both groups. The thing about music though is that it can test our metal to find our true temper or exagerate emotions for artistic (and political) purposes. The other thing about music is that you can pass it along and the song becomes concrete evidence that information can be shared and pass between individuals. And in the form of song, ancient words come alive in a singers mouth. Any way Gurdieff suggested that the keys to a culture and the universe and everything could be contained in song and that orders of being like earth to moon had a harmonic relationship. An individual also has a harmonic relationship with the culture they are part of and with the earth and the moon and the sun. Clearly mass is the one great difference but it got me thinking.... isn't there a connection between mass and pitch? And what is the smallest mass that you would still call human? I don't mean little bits of people or DNA. The human molecule must be more than one, but human culture in its total contains a degree of knowledge and history and suffering that could not be contained in one person or two but only a whole society. it also takes more than one person to make a good song. none of us ever makes up music, mostly we use what forms exist in the culture around us to express the things that art is meant to express. If we didn't there would be nothing to pass on and no common reference or 'context' for us to share. We need each other in order to continue being human. the more deeply we know that, the better we become. We need that vision of an endless sea of pain" to imagine ourselves rising above that. And it is that Vision which compells us study everything with delight and hunger and create poetry and power plants, all to give our children a foot hold in the world and Cliff Notes for the book of life.

11022002
Dedicated

Do you remember a separate reality where
God has many faces some of which are masks
Behind whose hollow eyes lies only void?

In that unspeakable space a form has left us
Without names and only our hands to guide us
To the face behind the reflection. We leave

Our mark behind, move on, past light
Till our teachers voices give us shape
And our words fall from God’s Mouth. To us

Each live being has it's name. Things become
Friends and fall shattered. We must go on
Amid debris to matter. Our mothers gave us

Hands, eyes, mouth and songs from the heart
To sing! Do not leave us only dreaming.

6:35 p.m.{11022002}, Tampa, Florida

I-275, the interstate through Tampa, grinds to a halt. Not uncommon, except that after a few minutes it becomes clear that none of the three lanes is moving.

For a few minutes, all engines are running, people are waiting for the traffic to move. I climb out of my minivan, step up on it.

Someone hollers at me, "What do you see?"

"There's nothing moving ahead, not past the point where that entranced ramp joins the highway."

A gal calls to me, "Do you think I can get by driving slowly in the emergency lane?"

I turn off the car and the lights and start walking around. I say Hi to a couple folks with their windows rolled down. A few other people get out of the cars. My wife gets out and starts talking to them. Everyone realizes the stop is due to the Bushes and Swarzkopf traveling across town to a rally.

"Bush is losing votes every minute we wait here," Masha says to a couple men.
They laugh, "Yeah, he's lost my vote."
"While he's finishing dinner, the traffic's backed up to St. Petersburg."
"They don't have to stop a whole highway just to move him around."

After fifteen minutes, many cars are shut off, people are walking around, joking about Bush.
And we're walking around on an interstate that's rather famous for its crashes and wrecks, but it's become a pedestrian way for just a few minutes. I mentioned this to a couple people who shared my amazement: no one had been on this stretch of road under 60 miles per hour and outside of a motor vehicle.
