Antlers:
You found yours
early morning.
on a walk with Dad.
Jealous, i searched
the woods and found
A horn in the boggy marsh
Where I had walked
several times before.
Together we found
A death, deep in the woods.
A skeleton lain
in an aura of disapated fur.
The skull was gone,
so i took away the jawbones.
and left the ribs and spine
in the still fir clearing.
Later I realized that my antler
Had been planted by Dave Jacobus
Yours was the larger of the two
we traded once or twice.
But i returned this one to you
Pointing out the old toothmarks
Of some rodent and the moss
that still fills the abrasion.
Yours was the wild mossy
Antler of the woods,
And mine was clean and bleached.
I can't remember which was which,
But i remember showing you
the marks and the moss
which suggesed
that the horn had lain
there for some time.
I thought the marks
had some meaning
Quenched in the Stream
Insects in the ossuary,
The gentle encroachment
Of lichen on the marble
The absence of Your presence.
Banish the notion that
All of us will perish.
Hold fast your grip
On the eternal.
Branches dipped
In the running stream.
Before the flood,
Before the drought,
Before the fire
Takes us all as kindling.

White Room
TITLE: White Room
In the white room with black curtains near the station
Blackroof country, no gold pavements, tired starlings
Silver horses ran down moonbeams in your dark eyes
Dawnlight smiles on you leaving my contentment

You said no strings could secure you at the station
Platform ticket, restless diesels, goodbye windows
I walked into such a sad time at the station
As I walked out, felt my own need just beginning
I'll wait in the queue when the trains come back
Lie with you where the shadows run from themselves
At the party she was kindness in the hard crowd
Consolation for the old wound now forgotten
Yellow tigers crouched in jungles in her dark eyes
She's just dressing, goodbye windows, tired starlings
I'll sleep in this place with the lonely crowd
Lie in the dark where the shadows run from themselves
