"George was a giant, a great great soul with all of the humanity, all of the wit and humor, all of the wisdom, the spirituality, the common sense of a man and compassion for people. He inspired love and had the strength of a hundred men. He was like the sun, the flowers and the moon and we will miss him enormously. The world is a profoundly emptier place without him."

Andrew came over today early in the afternoon. He was exited about his birthday. Masha and I talked to him and gave him a card. we couldn't find the styro foam gliders that Denny bought for the VA shows. We stuffed a dollar in the envelope and signed the card I gave him a "chinese coin replica" keychain and a small rubber frog. Later he came back wearing a glow-in-the-dark rosary. I asked him if he was Catholic but he seemed vaugue about it and asked what "Catholic meant" a green dragonfly lit on the handle of an orchid basket and we watched it. I described the dragonfly life cycle a few times. We watched it clean its eyes. Andrew's eyes seem clearer. We talked about Jesus and watched the dragonfly avoid a hungry lizard. Andrew cheered and stuck his toungue out at the Anole taunting that the dragonfly got away. the sad part was that he couldnt read any of the card. he is nine on may twentyfifth.

This was interesting I Found the post in a news group and thought I'd copy it and post it here. I'm not sure that it's entirely wrong for the government to influence broadcasting, or try to determine content, but considering the scruples of the Bush family, and the consolidation of a lot of mass media corporations in the past few years, ordinary people ought to get more interested.
http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2000/01/13/drugs/

In exchange for "advertising credit" officials of the US government have been reviewing and revising the content of TV shows to send anti-drug messages. This has occurred in virtually every popular prime-time show. Including ER, Drew Carey, Beverly Hills 90210, etc
etc.... The networks have been allowed to submit episodes of shows in place
of paid "public service announcements". Unlike the PSA's there is no
disclosure that the content is a paid advertisement. We aren't being told
who's sending us the message or that messages are even being sent. The
public trust has been violated along with payola laws written to prevent
exactly this. It is unacceptable for the government to be using
mass-advertising to promote policy without disclosures.

You probably won't hear about it on the network news for obvious reasons.
Please help to render this far less effective by spreading awareness. Repost
this message or one like it anywhere you think concerned people will read
about it. Email politically oriented television and radio shows about it.
The public needs to know big brother is talking to them directly through
television programs to mitigate the influence. No content in network
television shows can be trusted. It really makes all content of the
mass-media suspect.

You can be assured that if this is not stopped early that it will spread as
greater results are achieved through it.

Now is the time to contact members of congress about this issue. As of two
days the drug Czar has been on the phone to members of congress urging them
to renew this funding for 5 more years at or above the previous level of a
BILLION $ for the term. Our representatives need to be informed on this
issue. Please tell them you don't want the money spent for this misuse. At
very least restrictions need to be attached to this funding to prevent the
secret and undisclosed policy promotion.

Even if you support prohibition policy this practice should concern you.
The freedom and integrity of the airwaves is at stake.

Today Is Alice Wheeler's birthday. I thought if I posted something to that effect, It would be like sending a card or getting her a present. I haven't heard from her, though I did look for her E-mail adress today. I have her mailing address somewhere, but I can't bring myself to write. The last time we spoke she accused me of abusing her in childhood. After all these years I have finally understood why my parents do not want me to write to them. George Wheeler claimed that I attacked Mrs. Wheeler as well. I really did care for them as parents, and I loved them. I never tried to really hurt any one but I did pick on Alice, Imitating My parents critical style When my son died they blamed me in absentia. Well, I have finally realized that there was more to the picture. I still remember the way I felt running barefoot under the stars though dark woods I couldn't make myself run faster or open my throat to yell for Pamela, The Nurse who midwifed the birthing. When I burst into their house, she was just taking the phone call from our cabin. She had a flashlight so the trip back seemed to take no time at all. She went to the child immedeatly and took his pulse, listening for breath. I remember she said, "I think we lost this baby." But that was before she spent 45 minutes breathing air into his lungs while her husband drove the ambulance. Deborah was the midwife with us who made the call to Pamela; she took turns performing the CPR and she rode in back with us on the return trip. For years, I could not remember her name. Until I read"Voices from the Farm."

Denny and Masha occaisionally see Mr. Ha at the Mekong Restarant. Vietnamese Helicopter Pilot. He got his whole family out at the end of the war. He and Denny met in a welding class that Mr Ha was teaching. They just have that between them. Mr.Ha used to teach welding at the PTEC when Denny went there in the VA program. After a while Denny became an assistant teacher (not paid.) Denny would show the new students how to do the work and pass the examinations. Mr Ha would officiate. Once followng a robbery near the school, the questioning police asked Mr. Ha if he could speculate who might have committed the crime. "Do I look like a Policeman?" he demanded, "No I look like a welding teacher (helmet, apron, thick gloves) You look like a Policeman. You solve the crime."
The story was that Mr Ha fled with his family on an overloaded Huey . The plane was so heavy that it couldn't get off the ground. He had to tilt the rotor to drag it down the runway to pick up enough air-speed to lift. He was fortunate to have a big empty runway but the cost was the fuel. He emptied his second fuel tank before he spotted an American aircraft carrier. He was on one of the last American helicopters to make it out.
After eight years in the service as a helicopter pilot, Mr. Ha took a cynical view of the world.
Andrew, the boy who lives down the block, came over again around three. Masha went out and talked with him a moment. Then I came out. He presented me with a necklace made of plastic tabs. I asked him where they were from. At first he seemed evasive and I realized that I hadn't thanked him yet properly, so I shook his hand, in the "brothers" shake. He grinned and said it was a necklace. I asked about materials used and techniques, (not using those big words though.) He finally admitted that they were from his speech class. I asked if they were grades or if they represented his level of achievement.
"First you do it then they give you one of those," he told me.
So they were records of his work. he gave me twelve of them. Four of each color: red, white and blue.
We talked about different kinds of fish. he knew several and about whether of not squid were fish. I know he wants to hang out and do things together.{}
making art is fun and talking about stuff. there probably is a theraputic need for me to, because of my own sense of loss. the only thing is that as I already have a bond of freindship with him, I can't just stop taking my medecine.

The first time i met him was on 4/26/2002
Sometimes Andrew rides down the street holding a flag in one hand and pedaling his bicycle as hard as he can. Together we built a structure of bamboo and wire that was to serve as a garage for a matchbox car. He said he missed his real mom. Something has infected his eyes. He weeps pus and has scabs. He says that it gets better when he gets his medicines. I notice that he has trouble focusing on small print or detailed objects but he recognized words quickly sometimes after only three letters. He said he would see his real mom tomorrow. He said that he was a foster child and we told him that was ok. We didn?t say why. But we looked at each other.

Monday, May 13, 2002

Andrew came over again today he rang the door bell and i came out he did seem anxious to do something. but i figured that it was just enought to be around. he told me that his mom was OK and he would see her again on the twentyfirst of may. His birthday is the twenty fifth. he experimented with making sound by hitting different sized objects. I watered plants and Andrew tried to find the right sized rock to float on a circle of bamboo. after peter then masha and Denny Came over and I said Good by to Andrew. he asked If he could come over again I said yes. Afterwards Laurie called. She tells me that something happened to er. she got hives, and that turned into a bruise. Her whole upper leg looks like a bruise. I told her to take care and try to heal from the inside. The doctors dont know what it is and she doesnt' think It's serious. Her husband does though. Both of them have been through so many health troubles it's numbing. while I talked to Laurie a lady named Linda came over with her son Franklin. They said thaty they had seen the Iguana in the street and hoped that we got her back alright. She wanted to know what to do, did it bite what ever. Just freindly.

First, the lunar month starts today or yesterday when the moon is dark and when the Moon enters the sign Taurus.
Second, According to my Mom, Mothers Day originated as a day when mothers honorded their sons who had died in the service. She said the emphasis shifted away from that to what it is now.

from Twenty-One Love Poems

I

Wherever in this city, screens flicker
with pornography, with science-fiction vampires,
victimized hirelings bending to the lash,
we also have to walk . . . if simply as we walk
through the rainsoaked garbage, the tabloid cruelties
of our own neighborhoods.
We need to grasp our lives inseperable
from those rancid dreams, that blurt of metal, those disgraces,
and the red begonia perilously flashing
from a tenement sill six stories high,
or the long-legged young girls playing ball
in the junior highschool playground.
No one has imagined us. We want to live like trees,
sycamores blazing through the sulfuric air,
dappled with scars, still exuberantly budding,
our animal passion rooted in the city.

II

I wake up in your bed. I know I have been dreaming.
Much earlier, the alarm broke us from each other,
you've been at your desk for hours. I know what I dreamed:
our friend the poet comes into my room
where I've been writing for days,
drafts, carbons, poems are scattered everywhere,
and I want to show her one poem
which is the poem of my life. But I hesitate,
and wake. You've kissed my hair
to wake me. I dreamed you were a poem,
I say, a poem I wanted to show someone . . .
and I laugh and fall dreaming again
of the desire to show you to everyone I love,
to move openly together
in the pull of gravity, which is not simple,
which carried the feathered grass a long way down the upbreathing air.

III

Since we're not young, weeks have to do time
for years of missing each other. Yet only this odd warp
in time tells me we're not young.
Did I ever walk the morning streets at twenty,
my limbs streaming with a purer joy?
did I lean from any window over the city
listening for the future
as I listened here with nerves tuned for your ring?
And you, you move toward me with the same tempo.
Your eyes are everlasting, the green spark
of the blue-eyed grass of early summer,
the green-blue wild cress washed by the spring.
At twenty, yes: we thought we'd live forever.
At forty-five, I want to know even our limits.
I touch you knowing we weren't born tomorrow,
and somehow, each of us will help the other live,
and somewhere, each of us must help the other die.

the urge to climb

At a youth conference that Dr. Wheeler helped administrate, I met a man named Willy Unseold. He climbed with an American expedition to Mt. Everest. The conference was ecumenical Christian and mostly for girls. I was along as a kid because Dr. Wheeler had work to do on campus and my sister Alice and I could explore the campus of the Westown School or attend attend seminars as we pleased. Willy Unsold was there to give an inspiring lecture The lecture was about Climbing and having faith in your fellow climbers.
Three years later my mother, Dr. Wheeler, showed me a clip from a newspaper memorializing his daughter who died climing (Annapurna,) a mountain she was named after. A few Years Later I heared that he had died climbing that same mountain. That was probably when I was thirteen.
When I was in kindergarten I loved to climb trees, especialy hemlock because their branches protrude perpendicular to the trunk, and because there was one of those trees at each end on the playground. I used to race to the top with a girl named Diane Norris. She always climbed higher because she was smaller and lighter.

Update: March 09, 2005
In 1976 Unseold and his daughter Nanda Devi were on an expedition to climb her namesake mountain (Nanda Devi), the highest peak in India. His daughter died during the climb, which was plagued by accidents and eventual tragedy.

I admit that there were some inacuracies in my memory.
Heres a book abou
t the expedition.

I saw Andrew today. He came over to ask for help finding his freinds bike.
He was upset. I didnt really want to talk and play but we sat for a while.

Denny is over he just told me that the Sheffeild house sold 2.5 million. We all think he lost some money on it.
People around here (big rich guys) are buying up two or three little lots around the waterfront and consolidating them.
One guy down the street was telling us that some of the (waterfront) houses around here are doubling value in a couple of years but the houses are the same old things from the sixties.
Denny was telling us how some body saved the St. pete air port by putting in for a grant for lighting that locked them into a 20 year commitment. Besides theres a sewage treatment plant on the site.
First they talked about pilots licences and then they talked about cars.
Denny had a Pontiac that got seven or eight miles to the gallon.
It was a muscle car with a 440 engine.

Annoying though it may seem, life, that other interval besides the night,
without the vauge illusions poets cast, unfolds each day.
Quiet, simple and sincere as everyones fight
with death, life finds the only other way.....
Today finally I have this working. I've spent the better part of the week putting this machine back on line. I tried to get Masha to evaluate which emails she wanted to transfer to disk. We argued some and eventually we got through part of it. I had to set the machine up in safe mode. And have her go thought the files one at a time. Really I only needed her to choose what she wanted and save it. She asked me to stand over her shoulder to do it and then froze because I was there I had a fit, but we got through it.
I Heard Peter Meinke read a sonnet
About Pissaro. I listened from behind the caterer's screen.
Thick, his voice carried past the chocolate.

"Live life more boldly," he wanted them to scream.
Thick painting impressionists as a class.
until the house filled with the drunkards dream:

"Everything can be fixed," and this at last
He said, "I Will always be six years old,
Holding out my stick like arms to Mom.

South Florida's Heritage

Tequesta, Calusa, Spain,.
Who was here before me?
Were there beaches here?
I walked through Eckerd College last night to hear Peter Meinke read from his books. The student center was all shiny and bright with tinted windows and pool tables. Mangrove swamp covered most of Eckerd campus before the land was filled in in the late fifties. The people who lived here before the spanish had a fish camp just up the road from my house. maybe three hundred years ago they sat out and watched Venus set as they smacked holes in head sized whelks and left the busted shells in heaps.
This place looks so barren when you go out side.
It's may and already the temperatures are in the nineties.
The thought of having all this at my fingertips and unable to use it makes me shake.
The problem was getting worse, every time I tried, the system would boot up then freeze.
I could see all the icons there, I moved the mouse over them but nothing happened when i clicked. the keyboard wouldn't respond at all.

A Manifesto for the May
Interview with Marija Gimbutas David: What was it that originally inspired your interest in the archaeological and mythological dimensions of the Goddess orientated religions of Old Europe?
Marija: It has to do with the whole of my life, I think. I was always a black sheep. I did what I saw with my own eyes - to this day, in fact. I was very independent. My mother was also very independent. She was one of the first students of medicine in Switzerland and Germany when there were no other girls studying.
I was born in Lithuania when it was still fifty percent pagan. I had quite a lot of direct connections to the Goddesses. They were around me in my childhood. The Goddess Laima was there, she could call at night and look through the windows. When a woman is giving birth she appears, and the grandmother is there organizing things. She has gifts for the Goddess towels and woven materials are laid for her, because she weaves the life, she is the spinner. She may be on the way to disappear, but fifty years ago she was still there.
